New players think of the forced-capture rule as an annoyance. You spot a lovely move, and then notice one of your pieces is adjacent to an enemy with an empty square behind it, and now you must jump instead. The rule takes your choice away.
Strong players think about it the other way round: the rule takes your opponent's choice away, and that is the most powerful tool on the board.
Compulsion as a weapon
Because a capture is mandatory, you can predict an opponent's reply with certainty whenever you create a capture for them. Not guess - know. If you offer a piece and it is their only legal jump, their next move is determined.
A move that determines the reply lets you plan two, four, six plies ahead with no branching. This is why checkers positions that look quiet can be decided eight moves in advance: one player has seen a forced sequence and the other has not.
The basic unit of this is the shot: you sacrifice a piece, their forced jump moves a piece off the square that was defending something, and you jump back through the gap taking two or three in return.
The two-for-one, in detail
The simplest and most common shot works like this. You advance a piece so it sits adjacent to one of theirs, with an empty square behind. They must take it. Their capture moves their piece to a new square - and that new square is often now adjacent to a second piece of yours, with the landing square behind it empty.
You jump. And because their formation has been disturbed by their own forced move, the piece you take frequently exposes another, giving you a double or triple jump.
Net result: you gave one, took two. In a game where material equality is the default, a clean two-for-one is usually decisive.
The important part is the counting. You must verify the entire sequence before sacrificing, because a shot that goes one exchange deeper than you calculated loses a piece instead of winning one. There is no partial credit.
Why this makes checkers a calculation game
The public image of draughts as a children's game survives because the rules take ninety seconds to learn. The play does not match the reputation. American checkers was proven a draw under perfect play in 2007, after roughly eighteen years of computation - a result that put it among the largest games ever solved.
The reason it is hard is precisely the forcing structure. Long sequences of compelled moves mean the tree is deep and narrow rather than broad and shallow, which rewards accurate calculation over general principles.
That is a different skill from pattern recognition under time pressure. It is closer to the discipline of not starting a plan you cannot finish - the accounting a player does before committing to a dig they must complete. Anyone who has counted the whole sequence before unburying a card when they play FreeCell online is doing the same work, with the same penalty for stopping halfway.
The positional ideas that set up the shots
Shots do not appear from nowhere. They come from structural advantages built over the opening and middlegame:
- Control the centre. Centre pieces have more capture routes available and more squares they can influence. Pieces on the edge have half the options - an edge piece can only be jumped from one side, which sounds defensive but mostly means it is doing nothing.
- Keep your back row intact, but not forever. The back row prevents opposing pieces from crowning. Holding all four back-row pieces late, though, means four pieces taking no part in the game.
- Avoid advancing in isolation. A lone advanced piece is a shot waiting to happen for the other side.
- Count tempo. Who runs out of useful moves first is often who loses, because in checkers you must move, and a player with no good move must make a bad one.
That last idea - being compelled to damage your own position because you have to do something - is one of the most satisfying mechanisms in board games, and it is close kin to the way disc-flipping games punish greed. Over on Reversi, taking lots of pieces early leaves you with no safe moves later, and the player who runs out of options first loses control of the board.
Where the variants change the maths
The variant list here is a genuine laboratory for how a single rule alters a game:

Anti-Checkers is the most instructive thing on that list. Because captures are still compulsory but losing material is now the goal, every principle inverts - and playing a few games of it is the fastest way to understand how much of your normal play was driven by the forcing rule rather than by judgement.
Practising forcing sequences
The drill that works: before every move, ask whether any move you have creates a forced capture for your opponent, and if so, follow that sequence to its end. Most players do this only when they already suspect a shot. Doing it every turn finds shots you would not otherwise have looked for, and - just as valuable - finds the ones being prepared against you.
Start on the standard American game where the theory is deepest, then try International on the larger board once sequences of three and four captures feel natural.
